Historical Notes

The celebrated statue of Augustus, nephew of Julius Caesar and first emperor of Rome, was found in the Roman suburb of Prima Porta in 1863, excavated form the ruins of the villa belonging to his wife Livia. it became part of the pontifical collection of Roman statues the same year and has since been on display in the neoclassical Braccio Nuovo gallery in the Vatican Museums. The statue is believed to be a marble copy of a bronze original sculpted in about 20 A.D.
